Florence Kyoyagala, an exceptional graduate of Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS), has been granted a prestigious scholarship to pursue a Master's degree in Nutritional Science at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel (HUJI). Florence's exceptional academic performance earned her the title of the overall best student at MIHS in 2022, as well as the best female and science student at Uganda Christian University (UCU), an affiliate of MIHS.
"It feels great to have won this scholarship! When I started at MIHS, my goal was to be the best nutritionist, and I worked hard towards it. I am so happy and grateful to God that not only am I the best in MIHS, but now I even have a scholarship to study a Master's at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem!", said Florence Kyoyagala.
The Journey from Humble Beginnings
Originally from Mukono, a district in Central Uganda, Florence pursued a Bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics at MIHS. When she embarked on her academic journey in 2018, she faced concerns about funding her education due to her family's financial hardships. Fortunately, her elder sister, a medical doctor, graciously sponsored her bachelor's education.
Florence testified that education has improved her life. She comes from an impoverished home, and as a result, she struggled financially throughout primary and secondary school. When she joined MIHS, she was unable to afford a mobile phone and laptop, which were requirements for her course. However, she managed to get by using her friend's laptop and phone.
Overcoming Obstacles with Gratitude
Florence expresses deep gratitude to her sister for providing the financial support that enabled her to focus solely on her studies. Motivated by her sister's sacrifice, Florence dedicated herself to becoming an accomplished nutritionist, eager to make her sister proud.
"I am so thankful to my sister for paying my tuition fees. She ensured that my work was only to study, and she searched high and low for my fees. I worked hard because I really wanted to make her proud," said a tearful Florence.
Supportive Lecturers and Remarkable Mentors
During her studies at MIHS, Florence consistently demonstrated her determination to succeed. When asked about her aspirations during her first lecture, she boldly proclaimed her ambition to become the "Best Nutritionist," surprising her classmates.
Florence attributes her success to the overwhelming support she received from her lecturers, particularly Mr. Kigozi and Mr. Kungu. Their encouragement and mentorship played a significant role in her achievements. Additionally, an introduction from Mr. Kungu to Professor Aliza Stark, a visiting lecturer from Hebrew University, opened new doors for Florence.
"Mr. Kigozi, my lecturer, was so proud of my achievements. He kept appreciating my hard work. I am also especially grateful to Mr. Kungu, the course coordinator of Human Nutrition at MIHS, for introducing me to Professor Aliza Stark, a visiting lecturer from Hebrew University, who took an interest in me," said Florence.
How MIHS Set Up Florence for Success
MIHS, established by Mildmay Uganda, stands as a distinguished institution for building leaders in health profession development. MIHS offers a wide range of courses across its four departments, namely: School of Applied Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Clinical Officers, School of Medical Laboratory Technology; short and professional courses.
The lecturers go beyond teaching and facilitating to grooming future leaders in healthcare. As was the case with Florence, MIHS, through its academic programming and great mentors, set her up to be a perfect candidate for the HUJI scholarship.
The Path to Success
After the introduction to Professor Stark, Florence initiated the application process for the Master's program in Nutritional Science at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Despite initial concerns about financing her studies, Florence's exceptional academic record, boasting a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.73, resulted in the waiver of her fees and the prestigious scholarship being awarded to her.
A Heartfelt Acknowledgment
Florence attributes her success not only to her lecturers but also to Nora Babirye, a former student of MIHS and the first to pursue a Masters at HUJI. Nora's encouragement played a crucial role in Florence's journey, and she is immensely grateful for her support.
Plans for the Future
She is currently a tutor at MIHS. She is excited to share her knowledge with her students and serve as a role model. After completing her Master's studies, she intends to continue teaching at MIHS, research how nutrition can improve health outcomes and decrease disease incidence/burden in Uganda. She also dreams of supporting more Ugandans through her online nutritional advice company, Flourish Nutrition Experts.
Florence Kyoyagala's inspiring journey from a challenging background to becoming the recipient of a prestigious scholarship serves as a testament to her unwavering dedication and the support she received from her lecturers and mentors. With her commitment to making a difference in Uganda's nutritional landscape, Florence is poised to bring about positive change and empower others with her expertise.
