Welcome to Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences

It is a great pleasure and honor for me to welcome you all to the Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences. Thank you for believing in us as we stride on our mandate of Teaching, Learning, Research, and Community Empowerment. Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS) continues to create an impact through developing critical human resources that contribute to the delivery of quality health care in and outside Uganda. We have over 1000 students pursuing different courses in the four schools; the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the School of Clinical Officers, the School of Medical Laboratory Technology, and the School of Applied Sciences. We have also more recently introduced the Leadership School to nurture leaders from within and outside Mildmay. We believe that there is a seed of leadership in every individual and that with adequate support and guidance, every person can make an impact in the lives of the communities they serve and the persons they work with.

Inspired by our vision, “A Leader in Health Professional Development”, we strive to develop students to their full potential through the use of learner-centered approaches. We inculcate in them discipline, professionalism, leadership, and stewardship in line with our Christian ethos.

Our Mission of “transforming health service delivery systems through hands-on, context-based education, training, and research” guides curriculum delivery. Besides the Mildmay Uganda hospital, we have partnered with a number of health facilities across the country where students are placed and supported to link theory to practice and to develop the targeted competencies. Students are supported to develop critical thinking and reflection skills and to evolve into life-long learners. In addition to national curricula, special packages have been developed to support skills development in academic writing, leadership, and communication among other key areas.

We take pride in the great alumni out there, who have contributed significantly to the transformation of health and social care in Uganda and beyond. MIHS is a family of academicians passionate about challenging the status quo. The majority of our students are from Uganda, but we are also seeing numbers from countries such as Cameroon, Southern Sudan, Burundi, and Malawi grow. The diversity in culture and thinking spices up our community.

With support from various partners, we have undertaken a number of community projects in line with our mandate on community empowerment. We have implemented projects on Safe motherhood, Childhood Disability Detection and Prevention, Prevention of Sexual and Gender-based Violence, Palliative Care, and Comprehensive HIV Care and Management among others. Lessons learned from such projects further enrich teaching/learning.

We have also undertaken a number of consultancy projects in curriculum and learning materials development, mentorship, and coaching for palliative care service delivery, HIV in the Workplace, and Occupational Health, and Safety among others. A special thank you to the companies that continue to trust us.

I would like in a special way to recognize the support of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Ministry of Health, National Council of Higher Education, Uganda Nursing and Midwives Council, Uganda Allied Health professionals Council, Uganda Nurses, and Midwives Examinations Board, Uganda Allied Health Examinations Board, District, and Regional hospitals. Special thanks to the Mildmay Uganda Hospital, Entebbe Hospital, Kisubi Hospital, Mubende Hospital, Mpigi Health Centre, and Mulago Hospital. Your role in shaping our students and in providing the necessary guidance to staff and management is highly appreciated.

We are greatly indebted to our partner institutions; the University of Manchester, University of Washington, Uganda Christian University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, and Nkumba University whose guidance and mentorship have shaped what we do.

We look forward to working with you; whether you are a student, a partner on our community projects, or a company seeking consultancy services, we trust that you will find your relationship with MIHS beneficial in advancing your objectives and aspirations.

May God richly bless you.
